“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” is one of Broadway’s greatest farces. Light, fast-paced, witty, irreverent and one of the funniest musicals ever written—it is the perfect escape from life’s troubles. Written by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” takes comedy back to its roots, combining situations from time-tested, 2,000-year-old comedies of the Roman playwright Plautus with the infectious energy of classic vaudeville. The result is a non-stop laugh-fest in which a crafty slave (Pseudolus) struggles to win the hand of a beautiful but slow-witted courtesan (Philia) for his young master (Hero), in exchange for freedom.
“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum”is presented through special arrangement with Musical Theater International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI.
The program includes a cast of 25 students. Directed by Steve Young and produced by LesLeigh Golson, the cast and crew are all students under the guidance of professionals such as Andrea Edmonstone (Choreography), Van Craven (Musical Direction), Marty Aikens (Technical Direction), and Mike Brown (Pit Direction). This presentation will close out the 2011 – 2012 season, which included “The Imaginary Invalid” by Moliere and “Metamorphoses” by Mary Zimmerman.
