Troy’s Burger Corner: Marlow’s Tavern

Troy's burger corner

I brought a friend with me to Marlow’s Tavern in Dunwoody earlier this week. This summer they have been featuring a seasonal “burgers and brew” menu, so I thought I would head over and check it out. When looking at their regular menu, I noticed they had added a new burger titled the Marlow’s Melt. Instead of getting something off the seasonal menu, I decided to try the melt.

Marlow's Melt

“Marlow’s Melt”

This burger was topped with American cheese, caramelized onions, and MT special sauce on buttery toasted rye. This burger was solid. The sauce and the cheese went along well with the burger. Although I enjoyed the Marlow’s Melt, I still prefer their regular tavern burger. The actual burger patties at Marlow’s Tavern are what make their burgers good, and you can really taste the meat in the tavern burger. There isn’t any crazy sauce or toppings on the tavern burger to take away from the taste of the patty itself. My friend ordered the “burger of the day”, which featured brie, bacon, and tomato bacon jam. She thought it was decent.

Overall, I would recommend sticking to their regular tavern burger, where the great taste of their patties stands out best.

Troy’s Burger Corner: Bones

Troy's burger corner This last week my family and I dined at Bones Restaurant in Buckhead.  It was a very special treat for my birthday.   In addition to being world reknown for their steaks, their “Bones

burger” was ranked the number 1 burger in the city by Atlanta Magazine in 2015. This burger did not disappoint. No odd toppings were included, just your typical lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise-and a really well prepared and cooked burger. Being a steakhouse, this should be expected. They already have the finest meats for their steaks, so it only makes sense that they have premier beef for their burgers. Although I wouldn’t quite put it up with the ranks of the “sloppy slaw burger” or “the Hank“, it was delicious.bone just burger

When making the reservations, Mom noticed that the burger was absent from the dinner menu.  She was able to get special advanced permission from the chef to order the burger at dinner.  So, if you want to try the Bones burger make sure to go at lunchtime!

Troy’s Burger Corner: Stockyard Burgers and Bones

IMG_6985This past weekend my mother and I went to Stockyard Burgers and Bones in Vinings. They just opened this second location in the Vinings Jubilee Shopping Center.   The service was very slow so it may be a good idea to wait a few weeks until they work out some of the kinks.

All the burgers are made with fresh Certified Angus Beef, cooked “Pink or No Pink” and served on a toasted brioche bun.  I ordered the Jane’s Not So Plain  burger that comes with lettuce, tomato, smoked paprika aioli, and homemade pickles. This burger was very O.K. There were many interesting choices on the menu for burgers, so there’s a chance that I might’ve made the wrong choice. Mom had the Jalisco on a gluten free bun with pico de gallo, avocado, and chili lime mayo.  Mom liked hers better than I liked mine.   Despite my burger not being anything special, we both thought the atmosphere was solid.  They had live music playing on the outdoor patio and the Vinings Jubilee shopping center is a cool location. If you go, try a different burger and you might have a better experience than me.

Troy’s Burger Corner: Zinburger

Troy's burger corner

Wednesday a buddy and I went to Zinburger, a restaurant on the outside of Lenox Square. I didn’t find any articles or receive any recommendations on the place; I just remembered it was nearby to where we were lifeguard training and decided to give it a try. Although I don’t normally prefer chain restaurants, this place was pretty decent. I ordered the “ZinBurger”, while my buddy tried the “breakfast burger.” I had mine prepared “Kobe Style” topped with Manchego.

Troy’s Burger Corner: The Counter – Custom Built Burgers

This past weekend I went to “The Counter” in Roswell with a friend. Uniquely known for their build your own burger write-on menus, this place definitely caught my eye. My parents took me here when I was young but I needed to try it again to compare to the other burgers I’ve written about.  Although the feature of customizing your own burger seems very cool, my friend and I decided to order one of their recommended combinations, called the “Red Eye”. It was topped with tillamook cheddar, red tomato, apple-wood smoked bacon, sunny side up egg, sweet sriracha sauce, all between two English muffins. If you’re thinking that sounds like too random of a combination to taste good, think again. This burger was very delicious. The patty was thick and juicy, the other toppings were done well, and the sweet sriracha sauce put it over the edge. Not the best burger I’ve ever had, but definitely an extremely solid option if you’re in the Alpharetta/Roswell area. My friend and I also tried their milkshakes, which we both agreed were not worth the large price tag of 6.5$ each.

Troy’s Burger Corner: The General Muir

Hello readers, I am finally back. I do apologize for the long break between articles, I’ve been very busy with school. I have missed eating burgers probably more than y’all miss reading about them so don’t worry, more reviews are coming.  This past weekend a friend and I went to The General Muir at Emory point shopping center. Being basically an Upscale New York deli, it surprised me when I learned that they had a highly recognized burger. I’ve actually been to this restaurant before, not even realizing that they had a burger on the menu. Nonetheless, internet research taught me that they had a pretty good one so I decided to come back and give it a try. Titled “The Burger” it is topped with Gruyere cheese, caramelized onions, crispy pastrami, Russian sauce, pickles, and served with a side of fries. Obviously, the crispy pastrami is intriguing and sounds quite yummy, and the taste confirmed that. The only problem was that there wasn’t enough of it. If more pastrami was added, this burger could probably be ranked a point or so better. The rest of the burger was solid, tasting and appearing very similar to other upscale Atlanta restaurants with highly recognized burgers (Holeman and Finch/Bocado). This trending style of burgers that nicer restaurants have seem to adopted (two thin and oniony patties with pickles, cheese, fancy bun) will always taste pretty good, but will also always have a low ceiling to me. The addition of the pastrami improves, which is why this one is a notch over the other restaurants with a similar burger.

Troy’s Burger Corner: Illegal Food – Virginia Highlands

Last week I decided to check out Illegal Food, home of the #1 rated burger in Atlanta by Zagat. Although this place had plenty of tasty looking burger options, I came for the headliner: The Hank. This burger is made from house ground dry-age grass-fed beef, American cheese, crisp shredded iceberg, sweet vidalia onion, house made dill pickle, and special sauce. The description sure sounded yummy, and so was the burger. There is nothing too bizarre about this burger, but everything is done so right. It is also given just enough character to separate itself from a regular cheeseburger. The way all the flavors came together was so delicious. Every flavor contributed in a very tasty and perfect way, but my two highlights had to be the sweetness of the onions and the gooey cheesy taste from the American cheese. For a few moments I thought the Hank could beat the Red Eyed Mule’s sloppy slaw burger, but it just wasn’t quite as amazing as that slaw chili combo for me. Of all the burgers I’ve tried, this one without a doubt has been the closest to being my new favorite in Atlanta. This burger is crazy good and definitely worth the drive to Virginia Highlands.   In fact, it was so good that I took my mom, dad and brother two days later and had the double Hank!

Troy’s Burger Corner: Seven Lamps – Buckhead

Troy's burger cornerseven lampsLast Friday I went to Seven Lamps restaurant in Buckhead to try their “50/50 burger.”  While searching the internet for a new burger to try, this one caught my eye. Interestingly enough, this one isn’t even on the menu.   I’m not going to lie, I was a little nervous while ordering, but luckily the waiter didn’t act surprised at all at my “off menu” request. This 8 oz. burger is made from a half-and-half blend of grass-fed brisket and top round and then grilled over a firewood grill. It is then topped with bacon, caramelized onions, Thousand Island dressing, the kitchen’s Read More »

Troy’s Burger Corner: Farm Burger- Dunwoody

Troy's burger cornerThis past week my brother and I went to Farm Burger in the Georgetown Shopping Center. Both hungry and impatient, we chose this nearby option right here in Dunwoody. I ordered a beef burger with Wisconsin cheddar, Farm Burger sauce, bacon, and a fried egg. My brother had a beef burger with Wisconsin cheddar and bacon. We both really enjoyed our burgers. To me, their Farm Burger sauce is what really makes the burger tasty. Farm Burger gets away with not having the most flavorful patty because of their really high quality beef and tasty toppings. This restaurant is a really good option for a great burger without even having to leave Dunwoody.

Troy’s Burger Corner: Strip Steaks and Sushi

Troy's burger cornerThis imagepast week I had lunch at Strip Steaks and Sushi in Atlantic Station. Knowing it was a steak restaurant, I figured they probably had a good hamburger. This turned out to be true, and I really enjoyed it. None of the toppings were out of the ordinary, but the patty was thick and tasty. Also served on the side was a vinegary steak sauce, which was really tasty for dipping. If you are in Atlantic Station looking for a burger, I recommend you try the one at Strip.
