An Aha! Style Moment: Summer Nail Colors!

Hello nail lovers!  This year I went a different direction to find my favorite summer colors. I have become reacquainted with dear ole affordable Sally Hansen.  The Sally Hansen line has been around forever, but she has revamped my friends.  Her nail polish stays on so long that after a week and a half with no chips and fabulous color it was hard to take it off and try new colors.  She has the Miracle Gel line (at drugstores for around $9.99) and the Complete Salon Manicure line (at drugstores for around $7.99).  I have found that they both have the same results as far as longevity and the colors in each line are equally delicious for summer.  While you are there shopping pick up the top and base coat of hers as well; I think that makes a difference.   Yet another bonus, you don’t need a special remover to remove the Miracle Gel Polish.  The colors I have tried and loved are Carry On Blue and In Full-Blue-m.  Carry On is more of that fun bright summer blue and In Full Blue-m is more of a grey-blue that Read More »

An Aha! Style Moment: Violet’s Revenge!

The AhAHA_StyleMoment_Logo2a! Connection had our staff holiday party in February this year. It was very relaxing, we all got mani/pedi’s at The Nails of Dunwoody (next to The Dunwoody Tavern) and then went to eat at the YUMMY new Sandy Springs restaurant, il Giallo Osteria. It was wonderful because all of the AHA Gang tested nail polish colors for me. There was one very clear favorite amongst the group.  As a matter of fact, other salon patrons getting mani/pedis at the same time were also interested in Violet’s Revenge by Butter London, the evening’s winner. Here is what 2 AHA Staffers had to say about Violet’s Revenge: Read More »

An Aha! Style Moment: Nail Polish Colors for Fall!

Fall is here so it is time to take a look at Fall 2015 nail colors!  Okay, so I have to report my AHA_StyleMoment_Logo-01findings accurately, but this first trend pains me………At New York Fashion Week bare nails were making a statement:(  I am really hoping that here in Dunwoody we can squash that trend!!!  Now that I have that upsetting news out of the way, let’s look at color!  There are a lot to choose from, and I have tested them all, so here goes:

Over the Moon by Butter London.  This was a late entry brought to me by a very on-trend friend and has proven to be a real staple.  This is the perfect light to medium grey.  You might be tempted to paint the walls in your home this color as well.  It goes with everything and is truly the season’s best neutral that has major flare.  I really love this brand; while you are picking up this produ Read More »

An Aha! Style Moment: Eyebrows!

AHA_StyleMoment_Logo2Submitted by our anonymous Aha! Style Moment Editor

No more waxing our brows girls…………the full, “feathered”, brow is back.  Our brows naturally thin out with age, so the years of waxing can leave you with no brows (especially, for those of us that are over 40)! The benefits of a fuller brow are that it frames the face and camouflages puffiness, making us look younger.  This process is not easy if you are an addicted waxer…it could take 8-12 months for the “grow out” period.  But it is worth it!  On the advice of Ayshen at Riley Salon in Dunwoody, I began growing out my brows one year ago (Ayshen stays really current on cutting edge beauty trends).  I visited her about every two months and she would shape them, but not thin them, and she did not wax them.  I am very happy with the results and can now “style” my brows a few different ways.   For a nighttime look, I can fill in my brows with a pencil, which creates a more dramatic look, then brush them up for a nice feathered look.   For daytime, the easiest way to style fuller brows is with “Gimme Brow“, by Benefit.  It is sorta like mascara for the brows and comes in several different colors.  A friend of mine that is not “product obsessed” like myself wanted something quick and easy to define her brows, she said with “Gimme Brow” mission accomplished!  Brows are becoming big business!  If you want to really go for it, you can have a brow tint that can last up to 4 weeks. There are also “Brow Rehab” kits for sale by several different vendors, it is a serum you brush on like mascara, and it makes the hair growth go faster.  There are also “brow conditioners” now on the market, a simple Amazon search on “brows” will bring up countless products for your specific brow situation.

Stay tuned for some spring nail colors…….

Style Moment: Nail Polish Colors for Fall!

AHA_StyleMoment_Logo-01Looks like the weather is finally gonna snap and it will be late fall, heading into the holidays and we want to have our nail polish choices ready!!!!!  I have been testing all fall and really had a hard time narrowing it down and figuring out what was going on in NYC, London and LA, but I am ready to share my thoughts.

Dark polish is still really hot and it is fun to try new colors.  “After School Boy Blazer, by Essie is my fall fave by far.  It has a hint of navy blue, but goes great with everything and has that trendy, edgy feel we want.  You can wear it every day and it is also great for a nighttime dressy affair.

My favorite holiday color is “Harlem Silks from Bombay” by Deborah Lippman.  This is a very royal purple color that when paired with a shiny top coat is slightly glittery.  However, it goes on matte and if you put a matte top coat on, it stays matte, which is very cutting edge.  The matte nail is taking off in Europe right now and is slowly making a presence in the US.  Either way you wear it, it is your “go to” party polish!

I have an oldie but goodie for the holidays as well……Malaga Wine by OPI.  This is a classic, elegant wine color.  It is beautiful at the office and goes into the weekend with ease…love, love, love.

I am also really into the Jenna Hipp Collection at CostcoJenna Hipp is the “Celebrity Green Nail Stylist”.  After working in the beauty industry with celebrities on movie and television sets she became passionate about creating healthy nail polish after becoming sick on set because of the nail polish fumes.  Her products boast the “Five Free” formula which contain no Dibutyl Phthalate, no Formaldehyde Resin, no Formaldehyde, no Toluene and no Camphor.  Her products can be found at Costco in a box with several colors that she uses on her celebrity clients for only $14.99.  Great deal.  All the colors are really fun, but “Throwing Shade” and “All About You” are standouts. Who knew you could even go green when it came to nail polish?????

Jenna Hipp also has a line of hand creams (also at Costco) that are so moisturizing, non-greasy and also “Five Free”.  The adorable tube really brightens up the bottom of your handbag! They come in a set of 3 and make a great hostess gift or a “thank you” or a little pick me up for a friend that is feeling down.

Ready, set, go get your nails done!

All the Spring Breaks are finally over, time to put the Easter baskets away and it is on to proms, BBQ’s and then the pool!  I spent my time during Snowjam and Snowmegeden thinking warm thoughts by testing out all the spring nail colors for you and searching style trends!

As far as clothing trends go, one major theme I have seen in the magazines is Black and White.  It is always been around and never really went away, but it is making a real presence this spring and summer.  It is also something we all already have in our closets, which is always nice, and it coordinates well with all the nail colors below.

I usually like a lot of color but I also tried out lots of neutrals.  My favorite spring color is Read More »
