Surtax on Unearned Income-   Unearned income is now subject to an additional 3.8% on individuals, estates and trusts-  various types of income include, interest, dividends, annuities, royalties, rents, capital gains (other than trade or your business)- This is based on income thresholds of $200,000 for single and $250,000 for married jointly). There is much complexity to this area – contact your tax professional for specifics to your return.
