Lunch with Lauren: Ponko Chicken

by Lauren Townsend for The Aha! Connection

Ponko Chicken is Japanese-American fare and it’s SO yummy. It’s a super casual place, right off I85 and Chamblee-Tucker that specializes in crispy chicken tenders. If you get a plate, you get 3 tenders and two side choices from: ponko rice, brown rice, ponko fries, sweet fries, potato salad, cole slaw, ponko pickles, green beans, or side salad. I chose the rice and fries because I love carbs and those were the cashier’s suggestions. The whole meal was awesome. The ponko sauce tastes kind of like a sweet soy sauce, which one of my daughters and I loved; one did not like the sweetness. If you are unsure, maybe ask for it on the side? The fries though, they are KILLER. They are seasoned perfectly and just the right amount of crunchiness.

The kid’s menu is pretty great too. Kids can choose from ponko chicken, fried tofu or grilled chicken with fries or rice and carrots with ranch and a drink. My daughter, Cricket, thought the meal was good, but my daughter, Peyton, thought it was the best chicken EVER! She even went as far as to say that it was the best thing she’s ever eaten, which I will try not to take personally.

I would also suggest any of their salads, as long as you choose the walnut cilantro dressing, which is also available for purchase. Ponko Chicken has a full bar and many different sauce options if none of these sound appealing to you for some reason. I would 100% suggest you giving it a try to mix up your fried chicken spots.
