Audra’s Review of Restaurant Holmes~Downtown Alpharetta

by Audra Anders for The Aha! Connection

I’ve traveled all over the state of Georgia watching my sons play baseball.  Yes, I once was a “travel baseball mom”.   I tell you this because travel baseball families eat out ALOT.  You never know where you’ll be at meal time on a travel baseball weekend so you learn how to YELP well.   Back when I had two baseball playing sons we ended up in Alpharetta ALOT.  There was nowhere interesting to eat in downtown Alpharetta a mere 4 years ago.  Gosh, that’s certainly changed…..hence the reason for this article!

I have to believe that a good percentage of our readers have been to Avalon at least once.   But I’m going to guess that most of you have no idea that a mere 1-2 miles from Avalon, downtown Alpharetta has turned in to a lovely haven for shoppers and foodies.  There are boutique shops, restaurants, a great lawn, and more!   This map from Awesome Alpharetta shows 37 restaurants in downtown Alpharetta alone.

My mother-in-law was visiting this weekend and we headed to downtown Alpharetta after a quick trip to Avalon.   My husband told me about Restaurant Holmes a few weeks ago so I thought it would be fun to try something new.  Plus, we were hungry!  Once we arrived I was having second thoughts about where to eat because there were so many choices!   We ended up sticking with Restaurant Holmes but plan to go back to try Citizen Soul, Chiringa, Never Enough Thyme, and Carson Kitchen (which appears to be adding a rooftop bar)!    I know, I know…why can’t we have these restaurants in Dunwoody?   I can’t answer that question but I can tell you downtown Alpharetta is indeed AWESOME.

Restaurant Holmes gets two thumbs up from Rosemary and me.  They specialize in bringing locally fresh ingredients to the table for dining. They aren’t a traditional dinner service – small plates are their forte.  Our food was delicious and we loved the setting of the old home and ate on the porch where doggies are allowed!  Be sure to check out their Instagram page for beautiful foodie photos and lovely pictures of the restaurant.

As for our Holmes experience…we shared the Little Gem Salad, Shrimp Dumplings and Street Corn.  It was all delicious but next time we’ll ask for our Street Corn to be taken off the cobb!   Much less messy that way.  Enjoy our photo gallery!
