Book of the Week & Giveaway: American Dirt

By Audra H. Anders for The Aha! Connection

This book grabbed me from the first paragraph and hasn’t let me go.   I have a copy to give away this week. Insert a comment on our website or Facebook post about the book if you are interested in winning a copy. Winner will be announced Friday, 7/17. Apparently it has been a controversial Oprah Book Club choice because the author is not Latina although the main character of the book is Latina. See the following clip from Good Morning America to understand more about the controversy:

The GMA clip is from early March….before COVID took over the world.   Perhaps that’s why I never heard of it until this month.  No matter what nationality the author is, the book is extremely well-written, gut wrenching, heart changing and impossible to put down.

“This book is not simply the great American novel; it’s the great novel of las Americas. It’s the great world novel! This is the international story of our times. Masterful.”

  2. This book is on my “to read” list….plus I would be happy to pass it on to my neighborhood book club!

  3. American Dirt has been at the top of my list for several months! Would love to read it and make up my own mind about the controversy. Plus it addresses issues that are happening in the real world now. Thanks!

  4. Good for Oprah for leaning in to the controversy surrounding the book. I wholeheartedly support her statement that artists must not be silenced. I look forward to reading this book.
