Councilman Denis Shortal, a candidate for Dunwoody mayor, said he will vacate his seat on the Dunwoody City Council effective around Aug. 19.

“I’m vacating the seat,” Shortal said.

In June, Shortal announced his run for mayor, challenging incumbent Mike Davis. At the time, Shortal did not say whether he would remain on the council during his mayoral run.

By resigning now, Shortal clears the way for his vacant City Council Post 1 (District 1 Local) seat to be on the November ballot instead of requiring a special election, he said. Pam Tallmadge is the only announced candidate for the seat, and Shortal said he backs her candidacy.

He said he wants to save taxpayers money by resigning his seat this month.

“By doing that, it will not require a special election,” Shortal said.

The seat will remain empty until the Nov. 3 election, he said.

The next City Council meeting is scheduled for Aug. 24 at City Hall.
