Good morning! In August, the Dunwoody City Council passed a Face Mask ordinance to address the Covid-19 public health crisis. We were permitted to do this under the Governor’s Emergency Declaration – as long as cases in DeKalb remain above 100 cases per 100,000 residents. Yesterday, that number dropped to 100 and will likely continue to fall over the next few days. With this milestone reached, the Dunwoody Mask Ordinance is no longer in effect. (New CDC guidance about masking can be found here– https://www.cdc.gov/…/vaccines/fully-vaccinated.html)Businesses and organizations have the right and responsibility to make their own rules for their properties. Many businesses will likely continue to require face masks to enter their premises for the near future. This is no different than “no shoes, no shirts, no service” requirement that has existed for decades.
You, your friends, your family members and your neighbors may choose to wear masks long after they are required. This is absolutely OK. We all have our own comfort levels as we enter this next phase of the health crisis.
There is much evidence that the pandemic is easing locally. The number of new Covid-19 cases in Dunwoody dropped to just 6 for the past week which is the lowest since I began tracking. The test positivity rate for DeKalb is dropping as well, and the number of people who have received the Covid-19 vaccine continues to increase. I am incredibly proud of our community as we have worked together to slow the spread for the past year.
Finally, a reminder that nothing has been particularly easy this past year. This phase of the pandemic may be the most confusing of all. I ask that you continue to give local businesses and each other the space and grace to navigate this time.
