Carl “Skip” Bell served two tours of duty in Vietnam. The first tour was spent as an Armored Cavalry Platoon Leader, Staff Officer, and Armored Cavalry Troop Commander. The second tour was spent as a helicopter pilot, initially flying the Cobra gunship in an Air Cavalry Troop, then flying the UH-1 “Huey” helicopter in a General Support Aviation Company. Bell describes the differences in the lifestyles of soldiers involved in ground combat missions and those in aviation combat missions.
