Sadie Hawkins…here’s the scoop!

Someone asked me last week for “the scoop” on the DHS Sadie Hawkins dance.  I was discussing with a neighbor from Ecuador and she had never even heard the term “Sadie Hawkins” so here’s a very broad explanation followed by the specifics on the upcoming DHS dance.

A Sadie Hawkins Dance is usually an informal dance sponsored by a school in which female students invite male students.  The Sadie Hawkins dance is named after the Li’l Abner comic strip character Sadie Hawkins. In the strip, on Sadie Hawkins day,  the unmarried women of Dogpatch got to chase the bachelors and “marry up” with the ones that they caught. The event was introduced in a daily strip which ran on November 15, 1937. It became a woman-empowering rite at high school and college campuses, and the tradition continues in some regional American cultures.  Read more at Wikipedia

DHS Sadie Hawkins Dance Details
(Source:  Two of my favorite DHS Senior girls, Jenna and Elizabeth)

Date:  2/11/17
Time: 8-10:30
Location:  DHS Gym
Dress:  Hawaiian Themed, but casual
Cost:  $8 Single; $15 Couple

The “proposals” have been more low key than the extravagant prom and homecoming proposals.  Most girls have just used a poster with a clever question.  Most girls are planning to wear casual dresses with leis, and the boys are planning to wear tropical or Hawaiian shirts.  There is no pressure to bring a date!  Everyone can go that attends DHS (grades 9-12).
