Spruill Center for the Arts Announces Doves of Hope Installation planned for January 30

In partnership with Pebble Tossers, Spruill Center for the Arts is calling on the community to help create a new art installation in the North DeKalb Cultural Arts Center atrium. The planned installation will feature 2,021 origami doves to symbolize our collective hopes and dreams for the New Year. The project is similar to the “Les Colombes” installations created at the Salisbury Cathedral in the United Kingdom and the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

The art installation is a community-based project that asks participants to write their hopes and dreams for 2021 on paper, fold each sheet into an origami dove (Origami Dove Instructions) and deliver them to Spruill Center for the Arts before January 30th. Everyone in the community is encouraged to participate and can drop off their completed doves in collection boxes located in the Spruill atrium (5339 Chamblee Dunwoody Road) or create one on-site at Spruill. Volunteers from Pebble Tossers will also work with their community partners including A.G. Rhodes and InCommunity, among others, to help create the doves. Participants in the City of Dunwoody MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 18, will also have an opportunity to create their own doves. Completed doves will be collected on site.

“Our goal is to create 2,021 doves to symbolize a promising new year,” said Spruill Center for the Arts CEO Alan Mothner. “As part of our ongoing efforts to foster a welcoming and creatively inspired arts center, the doves will be the first of several aesthetic art installations at the Center in 2021.”

“Collaborative projects like this are a wonderful way to introduce the community to new opportunities for service. Pebble Tossers seeks unique opportunities for service learning and personal development and this fun, yet meaningful project, pairs those opportunities with a way to interact with clients from our nonprofit partners,” says Jen Guynn, Pebble Tossers Founding Executive Director. “It’s creative and fun for the whole community!”
