Boy Scouts Hold 4th of July Parade Food Drive!

IMG_0572Come to the Dunwoody 4th of July parade and come with donations for the local boy scouts’ annual parade route food drive!

Dunwoody Boy Scout troop 764 will once again enter a float in the Dunwoody 4th of July parade and also use the parade as a service opportunity to collect food for the Community Assistance Center (CAC).

Last year the scouts from St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church collected more than $500 worth of non-perishable and canned food from parade-goers for the CAC Food Pantry. Look for the scouts pushing grocery carts along the parade route to make a donation! Most needed items include canned vegetables, canned meats (tuna, chicken), canned pasta, canned fruit, tomato sauce, peanut butter, jelly and cereal.

The annual scout/parade collection is most welcome at the CAC Food Pantry since food donations typically decline during the summer. However, requests for food increase in the summer when children who get free meals at school are home and parents struggle to provide enough food to feed them. In the Dunwoody middle and high schools 32 percent of students qualify for the federal free or reduced price lunch program and in Sandy Springs, 55 percent of public school students qualify. Currently, the CAC Food Pantry receives about 1,200 visits a month.

CAC brings together the Dunwoody and Sandy Springs communities to provide compassionate assistance to neighbors in need by providing financial support, helping to meet basic needs and promoting self-reliance.

CAC is more than 300 volunteers strong and is supported by 28 religious congregations, public and private grants, civic organizations, schools, businesses and individuals. For more information or to become a volunteer at CAC please visit www.ourcac.org.
