Chesnut Charter Elementary School was selected to participate in Discovery Education’s “Reading Discovery Program,” featuring former First Lady Barbara Bush. On Thursday, January 29th, the school’s 5th grade classes participated in a live recording via video streaming of Mrs. Bush reading excerpts from the book “Rushmore” by Lynn Curlee. This book covers a STEM topic about the engineering of Mount Rushmore, as well as American history from WWI to WWII.  The 5th grade’s participation in this event kicked off a new STEM unit on the engineering of Mount Rushmore. As part of this unit, the students will complete a National Park service lesson on the national monument taught through math and art concepts. The lesson focuses on geometry, algebra, measurement and data.
