Davis Academy Students Give Back With Dunwoody Charity

Purim-PackagesAs part of a holiday celebration with a community service component, The Davis Academy teamed up with The Packaged Good, a non-profit organization that engages children in the giving experience, to assemble approximately 400 care packages to aid people in need locally and internationally. The care packages will be distributed to local nursing homes and homeless shelters and shipped overseas to soldiers. Nearly 400 Davis Academy elementary and middle school children wrote letters and decorated care packages throughout the day last Friday, March 25, adding a level of personalization to each package which contained toiletry items. The packages will be delivered to The Packaged Good’s charity partners who will distribute to individuals in need. The project was part of a school-wide celebration of Purim, a festive Jewish holiday that celebrates a story in which good overcomes evil intentions. In addition to costumes and re-enactments of the story, a Purim tradition is the giving of gifts to friends and to those less fortunate. As a single parent and former Spanx, Inc. executive, Sally Mundell started The Packaged Good to service the community and provide others with the gift of time to volunteer. The Packaged Good handles all the logistics and engages the children, so families, schools and groups can integrate charity more frequently into their lives. The Packaged Good started in Ms. Mundell’s home, but soon after was requested in schools, Temples, Churches, local businesses. In June Packaged Good will have its own facility in Dunwoody Village. The Davis Academy serves students four-years of age through eighth grade at its two campuses in the Sandy Springs/Dunwoody area. The school’s innovative program includes project-based learning, integrated technology, accelerated math, fine arts, athletics, world languages, Reform Jewish values, and more.
