Dunwoody Community Rallies to Support Malachi’s Storehouse

Since the onset of the pandemic in early March, the entire community of Dunwoody has rallied to support Malachi’s Storehouse, an outreach ministry of St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church dedicated to addressing food insecurity in metro Atlanta.

Every Tuesday afternoon, Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch together with Erika Harris, a long-time Dunwoody resident, join Malachi’s team to help receive donations of non-perishable food items, toiletries, and diapers. In addition, a number of individual families from Boy Scout Troop 477 out of Kingswood United Methodist Church come every week to help set up tents and cones for the weekly drive-through distribution. They have also helped assemble six new rolling racks that St. Patrick’s was able to purchase thanks to a grant from the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

A number of volunteers from the community, led by Tom Fullilove, tend Malachi’s ‘Garden of Eaten’, growing fresh vegetables donated by the Dunwoody Community Garden and Orchard that are then shared, while Martha Myers has made hundreds of masks for Malachi’s volunteers and clients.

“This outstanding community support is vital to Malachi’s mission, especially during this time,” says Judi Carlson, Director of Malachi’s Storehouse. “It is so appreciated and so necessary: during the month of May, we distributed more than 60,000 pounds of food!”

Recently, Malachi’s Storehouse was awarded Vanderlyn Elementary’s 5th Grade class gift. Three students from the student government presented the non-profit with a $1,000 check to be used for groceries or other needs. “You can imagine how delighted and honored we were to be selected for this significant gift, and are truly thankful for many other generous contributions that we have received, including funds from the Rotary Club of Dunwoody and over 200 individual donors,” smiles Carlson.
