Phase one of construction of the seven-acre park includes the refurbishing of two tennis courts for public use.
Dunwoody City Council Members will gather at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 2 to cut the ribbon and officially open Waterford Park, a new seven-acre park located at 4565 Dellrose Drive. This marks the completion of the first phase of construction, which included the refurbishing of two tennis courts and a pavilion, plus new sidewalks, parking, fencing, lights and rails.
“This neighborhood park helps us meet a goal of the City’s first Parks Master Plan,” said Dunwoody Parks & Recreation Director Brent Walker. “As far back as 2012, we identified the northeast portion of the city as an area in need of greenspace.”
The Dunwoody City Council approved the purchase of the land from the Waterford Swim and Racquet Club in December 2019. Funding for the $125,000 purchase came from DeKalb County District 1 park bond money, allocated by Former Commissioner Nancy Jester.
“When we could not save our pool, we wanted to have a safe place for families to continue to get together,” said Danica Henry, Waterford Neighborhood Association board member. “Neighbors have always taken walks on the property, so we were also interested in walking paths and a way to connect neighborhoods. We are excited to see our vision come to life and thank the City of Dunwoody for making this possible.”
The pool that was once part of the Waterford Swim and Racquet Club was removed and replaced with a sod meadow. Future plans for the neighborhood park include a bathroom, playground, bridges and trails to connect to surrounding neighbors. The tennis courts are available to the public on a first-come, first-served basis, with no reservation system.
