PALS Summer 2023 Session Announcement

PALS is please to announce its Summer 2023 program lineup. The session runs Mondays from June 19 – July 31, 2023 (no class July 3) at the Dunwoody Baptist Church, 1445 Mt, Vernon Rd,. Dunwoody, GA 30338.  Registration is online at www.palsonline.info. The classes are as folows:

10 – 11 am — LOCAL AUTHORS — We will again have 12 local authors (2 each class) speaking about their writing history and their books. The topics will include fiction, history, historical fiction, southern gothic, mystery, suspense, sci-fi, music and thriller.

10 -11 am — HOME IMPROVEMENT — MIKE CULVER will share information on how to properly and economically maintain and upgrade your home to get the greatest value possible as well as to enjoy your home while residing there. He will also discuss the basics of home maintenance and how to avoid costly repairs. Finally, he will share insights on the local real estate market and what drives your home’s value, which is your largest asset.

11:15 am – 12:15 pm — THE GREAT OUTDOORS – SALLY BETHEA, the founding  Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (the organization that holds polluters responsible) will discuss her work in helping to clean up the river and the significance of the Chattahoochee River to our area. DR. BILL WITHERSPOON will discuss the geology of the Chattahoochee River basin and how the River and its tributaries have etched their pattern into the Piedmont upland. JERRY HIGHTOWER, the education director for the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (a National Park Service unit) will cover the next 3 weeks with discussions on the mammals and turtles of the Chattahoochee River area and how decomposition helps recycle our land. Finally, SUSAN EDWARDS will share her knowledge of the medicinal value of the plants and trees found in our own back yard and how to identify invasive vs native plants.

11:15 am – 12:15 pm – POTPOURRI — During the first 2 weeks, TOM DWORSCHAK, a NASA Solar Space Ambassador, will present one program on the Hubbell and Webb Space Telescopes and another on the Apollo Moon landings and the future Artemis Moon landings. The next 2 weeks will showcase JERRY COOPER, Atlanta’s leading architect, who will present his class on How Atlanta Grew. The final 2 weeks will feature retired PROFESSOR ROBERT SHORT of Young Harris College who will discuss James K. Polk, the 11th President of the United States, who oversaw the largest territorial expansion in American history, thus fulfilling the American concept of Manifest Destiny.
