Lunch with Lauren: Vino Venue

by Lauren Townsend for The Aha! Connection

Well, my youngest child started kindergarten today. She is kind of a handful, so I had LOTS of emotions. (Y’all go ahead and add Ms. Davison to your prayer list). Instead of eating tacos filled with feelings while standing over my kitchen sink, I opted to rally my friends and meet for lunch at Vino Venue, because they serve lunch now. Between the four of us, we managed to get four kindergartners and four 3rd graders to Austin, Vanderlyn and DES collectively, so we started with a cheers of Jacques Pelvas Brut Rosé and a plate of pimento cheese to share.

The pimento and accoutrements were delicious and our server, William also suggested roasted piquillo peppers. As an entree, he suggested the fried egg sandwich and on any other day it would have been my first choice with pimento cheese, bacon and tomato jam, but honestly, my husband was super excited about getting our kids to school and spending some time alone with me, so he actually made me a fried egg sandwich for breakfast that was pretty delicious. Instead, I opted for the flank steak salad with blue cheese crumbles and onion rings. It was simple and light and the perfect portion for lunch; I was full but didn’t feel gross. My friend, Ansley, ordered heirloom tomato gazpacho with lump crab meat which she enjoyed as well as a grilled cheese sandwich with fontina, havarti, onion jam on grilled sourdough, that was delicious but altogether, too much food. My friend, Lauren ordered the Vino Venue burger, that they are apparently known for and it seemed to live up to its reputation. Finally, Nina ordered the crab cake sandwich with green onion aioli. I would have been most jealous of it had I not loved my salad so much. It was lump crab meat and a heaving portion of fries and looked really good. I already knew that I love Vino Venue’s dinner menu, but their lunch menu is definitely worth your time.
