Mount Vernon students design epic wheelchair costume for Star Wars fan

As Star Wars fans storm into theaters to see The Last Jedi, one particular ‘Resistance Pilot’ watched the movie and lived out a lifelong dream.

At a private screening on Wednesday at Phipps Plaza AMC hosted by Mount Vernon Presbyterian School, Chewbacca, Darth Vader, Kylo Ren, a jawa, Boba Fett, a Jedi, and a stormtrooper welcomed Jared–a 14-year-old who lives with cerebral palsy and loves Star Wars.

Prior to the screening, high school students at Mount Vernon, in partnership with the Magic Wheelchair, an organization dedicated to creating epic costumes for children in wheelchairs, revealed Jared’s transformed wheelchair– the Millenium Falcon. The big reveal in partnership with the 501st Georgia Garrison, was captured on Facebook Live.

During the last two months, students in Mount Vernon’s Innovation Diploma program have been getting to know Jared’s needs, utilizing design thinking, people-centered problem solving, the students built the “most epic Millenium Falcon” wheelchair ever. Much of the design experience was chronicled by the students through these photos and blogs.
