Recruiting Volunteer Reading Tutors

AJCL-Logo2The Atlanta Jewish Coalition for Literacy is currently recruiting volunteer reading tutors for the 2014-2015 school year.
WHO WE ARE
The Atlanta Jewish Coalition for Literacy’s mission is to inspire children in grades K-3 with a love of reading, thereby enriching their lives and opportunities for future success. AJCL is part of the National Jewish Coalition for Literacy which is a nationwide effort committed to helping children learn to read by the end of 3rd grade. This program has proven to be successful in more than 40 communities throughout the nation. AJCL is nondenominational and nonsectarian. AJCL tutors have diverse faiths, educational backgrounds and experiences. AJCL is operated and funded by the National Council of Jewish Women, Atlanta Section.
WHAT WE DO
AJCL recruits, trains, places, and supports volunteer reading tutors in Title 1 public elementary schools throughout metro-Atlanta. Tutors work one-on-one with students for the entire school year. Tutors choose which day of the week, time of the day, specific school and grade level they prefer. School liaisons select children who are below grade level in reading skills and would most benefit from the individualized attention and support received by a tutor. The tutoring session is limited to thirty minutes per student each week.
NCJW provides supplies to the tutors as well as access to a children’s book library located in its Sandy Springs office. Tutors choose books to read with their students and upon mastery they are gifted to the children.
In just one half hour per week, reading tutors have a significant positive impact on their students as they talk and read together. Their teachers report improvement in test scores, increase in overall confidence, interest in reading for pleasure and greater class participation. Children learn the pleasures of reading from caring adults and volunteers experience the thrill of helping students love to learn.
