The Georgia Department of Transportation will suspend all construction-related lane closures throughout Metro Atlanta and across the state this weekend to aid in the celebration of the Labor Day Holiday.
Beginning at Noon today, and continuing until 5 a.m. next Tuesday, there will be no lane closures for construction activities on interstate highways or heavily traveled state freeways and roads. Traffic likely will still be heavy in various Metro locations, however, as college football games are scheduled at the Georgia Dome tonight and Saturday afternoon; NASCAR races in Hampton are set for Saturday and Sunday nights; and the Atlanta Braves have home games tonight, Saturday and Sunday nights as well as Monday afternoon.
Also, the Department advises that some long-term lane closures may need to remain in place for safety reasons and that incident and emergency repair related closures may be necessary on any route at any time.
Those planning to be on roadways during the holiday weekend should call 511 or consult 511ga.org before departing to learn current traffic conditions. Motorists also are advised to drive slowly and safely at all times and certainly in work zones; even if no work is occurring, heavy equipment may remain staged in close proximity to roadways.
On Tuesday, motorists in downtown Atlanta and also in the City of Griffin are advised of project developments scheduled to take effect after 5 a.m. In Atlanta, the first street closures related to the replacement of the Spring Street Viaduct are to be put in place (detour routes can be viewed at: www.dot.ga.gov/springstdetours) and in west Griffin, a traffic shift will occur on State Route 16/Taylor Street in the vicinity of its intersections with State Route 3/Martin Luther King, Jr., Parkway and Pine Hill Road.
