Self-Defense Tips (for the holidays, and everyday!)

Live in Readiness Not Fear

  • When it comes to making decisions about your personal safety, remember to ask, “Is it worth it?” (i.e. Is it worth it to text on the way to the car vs. staying alert?)
  • Listen to your instincts. Attackers don’t always “look” the part. Be aware of your surroundings and listen to your gut. Don’t question your intuition, trust it. 
  • Walk with confidence and purpose. Attackers are looking for someone who seems like easy prey.
  • Don’t be distracted by your kids, phone, bags, music, etc. when walking in public. If possible, try to run errands without the kids to avoid distractions.
  • Don’t walk to your car alone; get a security guard or friend to walk with you (they can also help carry your packages so your hands are free).
  • When getting in your car, lock the doors, turn the car on, and put it in gear before getting settled, checking your phone, etc. That way you’re ready for an immediate exit.
  • If you sense someone getting too close, run away!
  • If you can’t run away, face your attacker and say something loudly (yelling “fire” is proven to get the most attention from passersby). This demonstrates that you are not vulnerable and it calls attention to the situation.
  • If they do try to rob you, throw your purse or wallet at their face or several feet away from them and then run.
  • In a robbery, try to prevent things from getting worse: agree with the person, stay calm, give them your money, valuables, etc. No possessions are worth you getting attacked.
