The term “Shami” is derived from the Arabic language and largely refers to the people of Syria as well as the surrounding areas like Palestine, Jordan, and Lebanon regions which it was called in the old days Bilad Elsham. In general, the term was used to describe “the people of the Shams” during the age of the Ottoman Empire.
