From My Secret Garden
Days are lengthening, trees and shrubs are budding, and gardens are ready for more attention. So pull those gloves and garden tools out of storage and get ready to plant.
First, make note of March 26, when My Secret Garden will host its annual Spring Open House. (See below for details, including our special gift for Garden members who spend a minimum of $100.)
My Secret Garden has replenished its inventory of trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals for Spring, as well as planters and garden fixtures. Be sure to stop by to find some good additions to your garden.
For our newer gardeners, here are some tips for starting the Spring season:
- Remove any dead plants and debris from the garden, add mulch where needed, and clean your planters to prepare for planting.
- If you have not already done so, apply pre-emergent to kill weeds before they take root.
- If you over-seeded a Zoysia or Bermuda grass lawn, now is a good time to apply fertilizer. Otherwise, wait until the grass is mostly green before applying fertilizer. If you have Fescue, you can still over-seed now. If you do, be sure to start lawn maintenance tasks by applying fertilizer and lime, removing weeds, and mowing.
- Survey your space and make plans for what you need and want.
- For color in the garden, plant perennials now (just arrived – we have ranunculus and primrose plants!) and add annuals after the last frost for longer lasting pops of color.
- Feed your trees and shrubs now with a quality fertilizer; if insects are a problem, consider using an insect control spray.
- Bluebirds will be looking for a home, so be sure your bluebird houses are clean and ready for them. Or, if you do not have a bluebird house, consider adding one. Watching the hatchlings grow and leave the nest is one of the highlights of Spring.
- In addition to readying the garden for bluebirds, you may start to see hummingbirds. Go ahead and add at least one feeder for these tiny, cheerful birds.
See you in the Garden!
