Major Westside I-285 Work on Tap for Weekend – Avoid Area if Possible

The Georgia Department of Transportation is urging the public to avoid weekend travel on westside Interstate 285, especially Sunday, as major projects will require lane closures in both directions at multiple locations.  Heavy delays are expected.

This weekend’s scheduled work – weather permitting – includes:

  • Continuous 9 p.m., tonight, to 5 a.m., Monday, closure of two southbound (Outer Loop) lanes between South Cobb Drive and Bolton Road;
  • Similar (9 p.m., tonight, – 5 a.m., Monday) closure of two northbound lanes between South Cobb and Paces Ferry Road; and
  • Closure of two southbound lanes between Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway and Martin Luther King, Jr., Drive, from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., Sunday.  This area encompasses the I-285 interchange with Interstate 20 and significant congestion is possible – on both Interstates in the vicinity of their interchange;
  • Also, I-285 sign structure work will necessitate a continuous 9 p.m., tonight, to 5 a.m., Monday closure of two northbound lanes and one southbound lane between Bolton Road and Hollowell Parkway; and
  • Westbound on Top End I-285, two lanes will be closed between Buford Highway and Chamblee Dunwoody Road from 9 p.m., tonight, until 5 a.m., Monday, for sign installation.

Those who must travel on westside I-285 and the Top End should call 511 or consult 511ga.org  before departing to learn current work status and traffic conditions.

Other Department work also is planned for the weekend:

  • On I-20 in Rockdale and Newton counties, two westbound lanes between Salem Road and State Route 138 will be closed from 9 p.m., tonight, until 5 a.m., Monday, as will the Salem Road exit ramp for resurfacing; and
  • The same project will require two eastbound I-20 lanes between U.S. Highway 278 and Alcovy Road also be closed during those same hours.
  • On Interstate 75 northbound, one lane between Howell Mill and Moores Mill will be closed all weekend for drainage work; and
  • On Georgia (State Route) 400, one lane between Sidney Marcus Boulevard and the former Toll Plaza area will be closed from 7 a.m., to 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.

Lengthy delays are likely and Georgia DOT advises those who plan travel on these routes to call 511 or consult 511ga.org  before departing to learn current work status and traffic conditions.   As always, the Department encourages motorists to drive cautiously, courteously, undistracted and unimpaired.  All work is contingent upon favorable weather.
