9 Rules for Holiday Tipping the Right Way

Note from Audra:  My friend Diane asked me last week what I thought about tipping the mailman, garbage man etc.  So, I found this article to share but would also like to know what others think so I’m opening this post up for comments.   Please share your thoughts!

It is the season to thank those who give us exceptional service. Here’s how to do it with grace and good sense.

It’s that time of the year when everyone wonders whom to tip — and how much to give — during the holiday season.

Do you tip your kindergartener’s teacher? How about the garbage collector? And what about the mail carrier, hair stylist and a half-dozen others who make your life sweeter and easier throughout the year?

It is considered customary to tip the:

  • Garbage collector
  • Baby sitter
  • Newspaper deliverer
  • Handyman or handywoman
  • Housecleaner
  • Hairdresser or barber
  • Personal trainer
  • Massage practitioner
  • Caregiver
  • Manicurist
  • People who groom or walk/feed your pets

How much you give depends on your finances. If you’re not strapped, tip the cost of one session for those you employ regularly on a per-session basis. Give a week’s compensation to people who work regularly in your home or for your family.

  1. How much do you tip the garbage men and where do I leave it so they can see it? Also the mailman – how much and where? Thanks

  2. I tape the tips to the top of the garbage can but we have decided as a neighborhood to collect $$ next year and present as a group tip. In my neighborhood, the yard guys are the same as the recycling guys, so six tips total.
