Bonjour to Bon Glaze!

When you’re watching your diet, the common recommendation is to spend your calories wisely. If you are going to indulge, then don’t waste your calories on a piece of drugstore candy but splurge on something really wonderful … like a doughnut from the newly opened Bon Glaze in Brookhaven.

Located in the new Brookleigh Market retail center on Johnson Ferry Road, somewhat ironically placed next door to a dentist and a couple of doors down from a fitness center, Bon Glaze is the brainchild of Kenny and Kelly Keith, two corporate refugees who have captured some incredible gourmet flavors in a beloved American breakfast (or all-day!) item. Having lived in South Florida, New Orleans and San Francisco, they are foodies with some fabulous taste.

The temptations on the menu that I sampled included the Nutella-glazed chocolate-moussed filled doughnut, the Meyer lemon glazed, the strawberries-and-cream filled vanilla glazed and the chocolate vanilla bean glazed. Others that I will return for are the red velvet and the ‘Nanner, a tasty-looking treat with banana glaze and peanut butter filling. Several of the doughnuts, including the blueberry sour cream, are available gluten-free. (Yay for Audra!)

The texture of the doughnuts is somewhat comparable to Krispy Kremes (my first true love in life) but if the Krispy Kreme is equivalent to the retail world’s Gap, the Bon Glaze doughnut is Neiman Marcus. All doughnuts are made on site from scratch each day using fresh and high quality ingredients, such as the Meyer lemon glaze. And even at 3 pm when I ordered my treats, the doughnuts were fresh and as equally delicious as I imagine they are at 7 am each day. Fresh-squeezed orange juice and a variety of specialty coffee drinks are also on the menu.

And I haven’t even mentioned the bacon! A perfect accompaniment to the sweetness of the doughnuts, take home a few slices of thick-cut bacon, available candied, chocolate-dipped or natural smoked. The Kellys often found themselves cooking up bacon at home after they picked up doughnuts so they thought, why not put it on the menu?

The majority of the doughnuts ring up at $2.50. Vanilla glazed and chocolate glazed are $1.25. A baker’s dozen totals $29.75. You can also enjoy the convenience of Bon Glaze’s drive-through window.
