How do I know when it is time to take someone to the hospital instead of a counselor?
-Anonymous
Dear Anonymous,
When a friend or family member has overtly threatened or inferred thoughts of suicide or homicide or expressed a lack of hope or intention for the future, do not leave them unattended and take them immediately to the hospital. You can complete a free mental health assessment with no appointment at any of our local psychiatric hospitals. If you want to use your insurance, call to find out where to go first. If your concerns are imminent, go to your closest emergency room. Be prepared to wait. It can sometimes take several hours to be seen and to complete the assessment. Do not bring any valuable belongings. Don’t worry about packing a bag. If they are going to stay, you can go get it later. Time is of the essence. If they are not willing to go, call 911.
